How to Arrive

  1. Air Travel to Hong Kong International Airport
  2. The Hong Kong International Airport is located in Chek Lap Kok, Lantau Island. The Airport is served by a highly efficient and comprehensive transportation network. Connected to Terminal 1 (T1) and Terminal 2 (T2), the four-level Ground Transportation Centre houses the station for the Airport Express trains linking the airport to the city centers in Kowloon and Hong Kong. There is also an extensive public transport interchange with facilities for taxis, franchised buses, and private cars.

  3. Transportation from Hong Kong International Airport to the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hotels in Shatin
  4. By Hotel Shuttle Bus:
    Hotel shuttle bus service is provided by the main hotels in Hong Kong., including Hyatt Regency Hotel, Royal Park Hotel and Regal Riverside Hotel at a rate from HK$100 to HK$140 for each person. Go to the hotel service counters located at the arrival hall at the Airport and they will make arrangement for you. Please check with your hotel the shuttle bus service before departure.

    By Airport Bus: 
    If your destination is Shatin, take the Airport Bus route A41 from the Airport to Shatin (Fare: HK$21 payable on boarding the bus in exact change). Royal Park Hotel is at the 4th stop and Regal Riverside Hotel is at the 8th stop. The bus runs from 06:00 to 24:00 at 20-minute interval and the trip takes about 40-50 minutes, depending on traffic condition.

    There is no airport bus going to Hyatt Regency Hotel or the Chinese University of Hong Kong directly.  If your destination is Hyatt Regency Hotel or the Chinese University of Hong Kong, you can take Airport Bus route A41 from the Airport to Shatin and get off at the 3rd stop (Shatin Town Centre).  Then take a taxi at the taxi stand right there. The taxi fare is around HK$60.

    By Taxi:
    The metered taxi fare is about HK$300 from the Airport to the University or to the hotels in Shatin, including the tunnel tolls. There is also a surcharge of HK$5 for each luggage placed inside the back compartment. The trip takes about 40 minutes. Each taxi accommodates 3 to 4 persons with luggage.

    Remarks:

    • Only Hong Kong currency is accepted. There are money exchange and banking services inside the Airport terminal.
    • There are three types of taxi with three different colors to indicate their areas of service, but all serve the airport. You are recommended to take the Red taxis, as they serve all of the regions in Hong Kong, Kowloon and Shatin.
    • All taxis are regulated and taxi drivers are required to display their Taxi Driver Identity Card on the dashboard.
    • Taxi fare information is listed on the inside of the taxi.
    • Refer to the meter for the exact charge.
    • Always ask for a receipt. This helps you track down lost items or the taxi driver.

    By Airport Express train (Not recommended, as it involves many transfers and not suitable if carrying large luggage:
    Take the Airport Express Train from the Airport to Tsing Yi Station (Fare: HK$60) and take the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) at Tsing Yi Station to University Station (Fare: HK$11). The trip takes about 60 minutes.

    The route:
    Airport (Airport Express) → Tsing Yi Station (Change to MTR) → Lai King Station (transfer) → Prince Edward Station (transfer) → Kowloon Tong Station (transfer) → University Station



  5. Transportation from hotels to CUHK
  6. Coming to CUHK
    If you are staying in Hyatt Regency Hotel, the conference venue at the Chinese University of Hong Kong is within walking distance.

    If you are staying in the hotels in Shatin (Royal Park Hotel and Regal Riverside Hotel), you can go to the Shatin MTR Station, and take the north-bound train to the University Station (the second stop from Shatin). The trip takes about 15 minutes including waiting time, and the fare is HK$4.   You may also choose to take a taxi which is more direct and convenient.  The taxi fare is about HK$60 and the trip takes about 8 minutes.

    If you are staying in hotels in Kowloon, take the MTR East Rail Line to the University Station. The trip takes about 30 minutes.  You may also choose to take a taxi to the conference venue.

Immigration
All visitors to Hong Kong must have a passport that is valid for at least six months after the planned departure date from Hong Kong. Nationals of most countries do not require visas and can stay for periods varying from 7 days to 180 days, depending on nationality. If your are unsure of your status, check with any Chinese embassy or consulate. Public Transportation
Hong Kong is geographically compact and boasts one of the world's most efficient, safe, affordable and frequent public transport systems. Whether by taxi, ferry, rail, bus or tram, you can get around easily and catch wonderful glimpses of the city along the way.

For convenience, use an Octopus Card electronic stored-value card, an electronic fare card that is accepted by almost all public transport, and at many fast food restaurants and convenience stores. It's easy and convenient to use, saves time and eliminates need for small change. Add money to it when you need to, and any unspent value in On-Loan Octopus is refundable along with the HK$50 deposit (minus HK$7 handling fee for cards returned within three months). Local Currency
The local currency is Hong Kong Dollars (HK$). The HK Dollar exchange rate is pegged with the US Dollar at about US$1 = HK$7.8. You may exchange most international currencies at the money exchange outlets inside the airport terminals, licensed money exchanges in town, or at local banks.

Local phone cards are easily available from convenience stores at the airport, MTR stations, and throughout Hong Kong.

Electricity
The electricity supply in Hong Kong is in the form of Alternating Current (AC) at a frequency of 50 Hertz. For domestic customers the voltage supplied is either 220 volts single phase or 220/380 volts 3 phase 4 wires. The power supply is reliable.

The standard plug is the British-style rectangular blade 3-pin plug, but older buildings may still have 3-pin, round plugs, both small and large. Two-pin round plugs are used for bathroom appliances like shavers or toothbrushes.

The weather in July is hot, humid and sunny, with occasional showers and thunderstorms. The temperature can exceed 31°C. However, most buildings and transportation are air-conditioned. You may need a light jacket indoors as the air-conditioning can be cold.

All the major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express) are accepted in hotels, and in most restaurants and shops

Shopping hours
Most shops open daily from 10:00 or 11:00 to 22:00. Some shops will stay open or close later.

Tips and Taxes
Hotels: service (10%) and prevailing government tax (if applicable) are usually included.
There is no sales tax in Hong Kong.
Restaurants: service (10%) is usually included in most restaurants (extra tipping is at your discretion depending on service received. Otherwise, tipping would usually be 10-15% of your bill)
Taxis: Fares are fixed according to meters. Tips are discretionary depending on service received, and usually may be covered by small changes.
